Mosaic Art on Kauai 2018-19

I am so grateful to Julia Sanderl who asked me to take over an Art class in 2016. Julia was the Art teacher and one of the best I have ever met. The first time I walked into her classroom, she was creating beautiful Spanish tiles with her students and this caught my attention. By the way, she taught at La Serna HS in Whittier, my hood where I grew up. How small the world is, right? The way she knew about pottery, wheels, kilns mesmerized me; and different kinds of Art opened up my mind to other creations. That year, when Julia moved up to Vice Principal, I worked alongside Adam Yund. He now has moved up as well in Utah where his art includes iron and woodwork, spectacular! When he moved away, I took over the huge classroom which is actually the size of two. It included a supply closet that I LOVED, and another smaller room with several computers. I was in awe! I loved it, and teaching Art on Kauai. How I miss it so!

On future posts, I will include other pieces of Art my students created. I did want to share the picture here where I was with the Music Teachers, Technology, and Art. Mary, our music teacher is also one of the best music teachers I have met and I do know many. What she does for her students is remarkable! She has actually performed many times at the Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton, our old neck of the woods. Lastly, Chris is the Technology teacher and also very gifted as well. Both our children Sofia and Michael have taken classes with him and it lead them to be newscasters for their school. Chris is now teaching at Kapaa High School. Brooke helped us set up that year and she is now teaching in Tennessee. I heard she is teaching Hawaiian Studies, how awesome is that? Mike and Julia were a great team as VPs along with Ms. Andrade and later Mr. Flores not pictured. They took care of things and loved the students. These were wonderful times but very short lived.

One of the Art Pieces I had my students create were Mosaic Art made with paper. They spent some time planning their piece. A rough draft was done first in their Art Journals, next they wrote about them, and finally cutting or ripping their pieces of paper to create their Masterpieces. Beautiful Work!

I created a few of my own as well. I love birds because they are flamboyantly colored in plumage and fly freely above us. As we returned back to the Mainland, I gifted these to Family Members. These projects are a labor of love and take a long time to complete. But the end result is priceless!

Once again your talents elevated to another level! I was in Awe as I observed your creativity be transferred to your students. They absolutely loved you and the class! It was bittersweet to leave them but necessary. Miro
